Sebold, Alice

(US, 1963– )

Sebold's debut novel, The Lovely Bones (2002) achieved both critical acclaim and best-seller status. Set in the outskirts of Philadelphia, it is narrated by 14-year-old Susie Salmon, recently murdered by a reclusive neighbour who turns out to be a serial killer. Looking down from her own version of heaven, she watches her family and friends attempting to continue their shattered lives in her absence, and her own story is gradually revealed. Sebold's touch is light and deft, blending the everyday with poignant grief and horror. This book is almost impossible to put down.
