Tips for Paying Credit Cards Online



It is easy to a pay credit card bill online. In fact, most credit card companies now prefer that bill paying is conducted electronically, online, because it saves them money. If customers pay for credit bills online, the credit card company can save dramatically on mailing costs and printing.



Paying credit cards online is very easy for consumers who have at least a little knowledge about computers. The process is simple:

1. Go to the credit card website and register to become a user. You will need to create a password and know your account details, including the card number and your personal identification. Some websites also have you select an account image or answer some key questions they can use if they need to identify you online.

2. There will be a box for payments, statements, or a section marked “Pay My Bill Now”. Click on the box and you will view a new screen in a new window where you can select a payment type, date, payment amount and indicate what bank account you will be using to make the payment.

3. When filling in the payment date, be sure to read the screen carefully. There may be a general payment date that is the regular due date, or you can adjust the date to make an early payment. Usually payments are not accepted the same day, although in some cases if it is very early in the day this is possible. There may be a box that details how long payments take to process.

4. Fill in the payment amount and hit the enter button or “make payment” box. This takes you to a confirmation screen and where you can print out a receipt for your payment. Payments online must be confirmed to authorize payment.

5. Look for an email from the credit card company that indicates you have made a payment. It should show the amount paid and tell you what date payments will post. A posting date may occur prior to your ability to view the online payment. It takes a few days for online payments to show up online, but they do post as scheduled on the date that you select.

Paying credit card bills online is a great time saver and conserves energy because you do not have to drive anywhere to make a payment. A click of the mouse and your payment is electronically in process. In a day or two, the amount will be removed automatically from your bank account and sent to the credit card company. When everything is finished, the payment will be reflected on your online account screen.

Beware of scam emails that you may receive indicating a problem with your account and asking you to click on or go to a link. Never, ever answer these emails or links or provide information. These are identity thieves. Go to your credit card website for official communications. Online bill pay companies will never ask for information in an email.
