A Guide to AAA Southern California

The Auto Club of Southern California, commonly referred to as Triple A, is a regional branch of an organization that was founded by automobile enthusiasts in the United States in 1902 to campaign for better roadways. There are over 65 branches of the club, denoted by region. Each region has members who pay an annual fee to be part of the club. Membership benefits include 24 hour, 365 day a year roadside assistance. Southern California triple A has garnered an excellent reputation for providing motorists with help, either when they need a tow, have a flat tire, or have other common automotive troubles. Recreational vehicles and motorcycles also fall within the purview of the club’s roadside assistance. The enormous size and corresponding membership base of the organization allows it to offer a wide variety of services above and beyond traditional automotive assistance.

As an example, Southern California Triple A has expanded its services to include automotive, home owner, and life insurance, as well as travel planning services. The club is able to offer discounts on insurance for those members who choose to insure both their homes and automobiles under one policy. Historically, Triple A has offered its members comprehensive maps, but the travel planning allows members to also book flights, hotels, and special vacation packages online. The organization also offers extensively researched advice on what to look for when buying new and used cars, and how to properly maintain an existing vehicle. The club sanctions smog check facilities within Southern California. Additionally, the club offers members the rare privilege of being able to conduct business related to the Department of Motor Vehicles through official AAA offices, including car registration and placard replacement.

Triple A also has a driver education service for young drivers, and traffic school for those drivers who have committed a moving violation and are eligible to remove potential points from their license. The driver education program consists of 30 classroom hours and 6 to 10 in car driving hours with a qualified instructor. Members pay ten percent less for the online traffic school option, which allows Southern California based participants to re-take the final exam until they pass.

Because Southern California has such a pronounced driving culture, AAA closely monitors gas prices, issuing reports on expected increases or fluctuations in the rate. AAA offers credit cards through a partnership with Visa. Whenever cardholders use the AAA credit card to pay for gas, they receive a small monthly discount on their bill. The club also sponsors local automotive events and conferences, and on occasion involves itself in other aspects of the community, including college football games at universities such as UCLA and USC.

The longstanding reputation of the Southern California Automobile Club for quality and service has made its icon a desirable addition for many hotels and restaurants. The benefits of membership, while often literally tangible, also include being part of a much larger community of national and, in some cases, international affiliates who subscribe to a particular set of standards.
