Cotyledon



Cotyledon, first leaf developed by a seed plant's embryo. Cotyledons are formed in seeds and function primarily to absorb stored food. Plants with single cotyledon embryos are called monocots; dicots are embryos with 2 cotyledons; and gymnosperms have more than 2 cotyledons.
