Coronation

Coronation, ceremony of crowning a sovereign, usually consisting of a solemn ritual of religious as well as secular significance. It generally includes the anointing of the sovereign, investiture with special garments and symbols of royalty such as a crown, pronouncement of the coronation oath, enthronement, and, in Christian countries, taking of Communion. The actual authority of the new sovereign usually commences with the death of the predecessor. The kings and queens of England have been crowned in Westminster Abbey since 1066.
