Cornwallis, Charles Cornwallis, 1st Marquis of (1738–1805), British general whose surrender to Washington at Yorktown (Oct. 19, 1781) ended the Revolutionary War. Earlier, he had defeated Nathanael Greene in the Carolinas. He later gave important service as governor-general of India (1786–93 and 1805), and as viceroy of Ireland (1798–1801).
