Cornell University, nonsectarian, coeducational university founded in 1865 and located in Ithaca, N.Y. Named for its founder, businessman and philanthropist Ezra Cornell, the university is financed both by its endowment and by public support. The university consists of 15 colleges and schools, including the medical and nursing schools in New York City, and 4 specialized colleges, supported by legislative appropriation, that are part of the State University of New York: the Veterinary College, the College of Agriculture, the College of Human Ecology, and the School of Industrial and Labor relations.
