Coot

Coot (genus Fulica), common member of the rail family of water birds. The American coot ranges from southern Canada to northern South America and is found on stretches of fresh water, where it is distinguished by its contrasting black plumage and white bill and tail. It paddles with its lobed feet and often skitters over the surface of the water. Other coots found around the world include the giant coot and horned coot of the Andes. The nest of a coot usually floats on the water, and the chicks have surprisingly bright colors.
