Continental Association



Continental Association, agreement adopted by the First Continental Congress of the American colonies. The purpose of the Continental Association was to defend American rights by greatly reducing imports, halting participation in the slave trade, stopping consumption of British and Irish goods and some foreign and West Indian goods, and stopping exports to Britain, Ireland, and the West Indies. The agreement was adopted on Oct. 20, 1774.
