Constantine

Constantine, 2 kings of Greece. Constantine I (1868–1923) reigned 1913–17 and 1920–22. During World War I he opposed the Allies and was forced to abdicate the throne to his second son, Alexander. Brought back into power after Alexander's death, he abdicated again after the Greeks were defeated in a war with the Ottoman Empire. Constantine II (1940–) was king of Greece 1964–74. As a result of his unsuccessful attempt to overthrow the military junta ruling Greece at the time, Constantine Π was forced into exile in Italy. In 1974 the Greek people voted to replace the monarchy with a republican form of government.
