Compass plant



Compass plant, or pilotweed, prairie plant (Silphium laciniatum) of the family Compositae. Its name comes from the tendency of its lower leaves to line up in a north-south direction. The compass plant has a tall stalk, up to 12 ft (3.5 m), covered with short, rough hairs and large solitary flowers.
