Community property

Community property, legal system of property ownership by husband and wife existing in several states in the United States. Under the system, any property acquired by either spouse after marriage, except by gift or inheritance, is considered as being owned by both. Generally, each spouse may dispose by will of only a part of his or her half of the community property and is powerless to affect the other's half. In case of divorce the property is divided.
