Code Napoléon

Code Napoléon, French legal code, officially the Code Civil. Napoleon I, as first consul, appointed a commission to devise a replacement for the confused and corrupt local systems formerly in force. The code, made up of 2,281 articles arranged in 3 books, was enacted in 1804 and, although much altered, is still in force today.
