Sir Henry Clinton



Clinton, Sir Henry (1738–95), British general. He was appointed (1778) commander-in-chief of British forces during the American Revolution after distinguishing himself at Bunker Hill. He captured Charleston in 1780 but resigned in 1781. He was blamed for the British surrender at Yorktown in that year.
