Clement VIII

Clement VIII (1536–1605), pope (1592–1605). Clement fasted extensively, practiced devotions, and traveled on foot to Rome's pilgrimage churches. Reversing a papal policy, he allied himself with France instead of Spain and recognized Henry of Navarre, a Protestant convert who reverted to Catholicism, as King Henry IV of France.
