Cassius Marcellus Clay



Clay, Cassius Marcellus (1810–1903), U.S. abolitionist, politician, and statesman. Clay founded the antislavery journal True American, in Lexington, Ky., 1845. He was a founder of the Republican Party (1854), and U.S. ambassador to Russia (1861–62 and 1863–69).
