Chronometer

Chronometer, extremely accurate clock, used especially in navigation. The chronometer invented by John Harrison (1759) allowed navigation to determine longitude accurately for the first time. The mechanical chronometer is spring- driven, like a watch, but its parts are larger and devices in the spring minimize effects of temperature changes and the ship's rolling movements.
