Christchurch



Christchurch (pop. 312,800), New Zealand's third largest city, located on South Island near the east coast. A tourist and commercial center, it produces clothing, electrical goods, and fertilizers, and is served by an international airport, railroads, and tunnels linking the city with Lyttelton, the chief port. An Anglican church group settled Christchurch in 1850 and established the University of Canterbury there in 1873.
