Chinook



Chinook, Native American tribe of the Pacific Northwest. The Chinook lived along the mouth of the Columbia River, trading, fishing, and gathering berries, nuts, and roots. Religion centered on a ritual welcoming the annual salmon run. Epidemics and contact with European American civilization destroyed Chinook culture in the 1800s. Modern Chinook live in Washington and Oregon making a living by ranching and fishing.
