Chesterton, G(ilbert) K(eith) (1874–1936), English author and critic, noted for his lyrical style and delight in paradox. He wrote poetry, stories (the Father Brown detective stories, 1911–35), novels (The Napoleon of Notting Hill, 1904), literary criticism (on Browning, 1903, and Dickens, 1906); and essays, collected in Tremendous Trifles (1909).
