Samuel Chase



Chase, Samuel (1741–1811), U.S. Supreme Court justice (1796–1811). A signer of the Declaration of Independence, he was also a member of the Maryland legislature and the Continental Congress. In 1804 an unsuccessful attempt to impeach him was made by President Jefferson, who believed Chase to be a partisan pro-Federalist.
