Charles I



Charles I (1887–1922), last emperor of Austria and King of Hungary (1916–18). When coming to the throne, during World War I, he made peace overtures to the Allies, which provoked opposition in Germany. He abdicated after Austria's defeat in the war, going into exile in Switzerland. Three years later he unsuccessfully tried to regain the throne of Hungary.
