Chaparral, area of plant growth dominated by shrubs, evergreen oaks (including the mountain mahogany and scrub oak), and the chamiso scrub. North American chaparrals exist in southern California, some slopes of the Rocky Mountains, the Sierra Nevada, and Baja California, in Mexico.
