Cereal, generic name for annual plants of the grass family, including wheat, rice, corn, barley, sorghum, millet, oats, and rye. Cereal is richer in carbohydrates than any other food, and also contains protein and vitamins. About 1,757 million acres of the world's arable land are sown with cereal crops each year.
