Cayenne



Cayenne (pop. 41,100), capital of French Guiana, situated on an island in the Cayenne River. It was founded by the French in 1643 and from the late 17th century until 1946 was a notorious French penal colony. Gold, hides, rum, cocoa, and cayenne pepper pass through the port.
