Henry Cavendish



Cavendish, Henry (1731–1810), English chemist and physicist who showed hydrogen to be a distinct gas, water to be a compound—not an elementary substance, and the composition of the atmosphere to be constant. He also used a torsion balance to measure the density of the earth (1798).
