Sir George Étienne Cartier



Cartier, Sir George Étienne (1814–73), Canadian statesman and leading French-Canadian advocate of confederation. Elected to the Canadian parliament in 1848, he was joint prime minister (1857–62) with Sir John Macdonald, under whom he later served as minister of defense in the first dominion government.
