Cartagena



Cartagena (pop. 168,800), city and seaport on the Mediterranean coast in southeastern Spain. The Carthaginians, attracted by the gold and silver ores there, founded the city about 225 B.C. During the Civil War of 1936–39, Cartagena was a naval base for General Franco.
