Constantine Caramanlis

Caramanlis, Constantine (1907–98), Greek premier (1955–63, 1974–80) and president (1980–85, 1990–95). Following a dispute with then King Paul, he resigned as premier and went into exile in Paris (1963). He returned 11 years later when the military junta ruling Greece fell because of the Cyprus crisis. He helped restore constitutional government and his party, New Democracy, won a big victory in 1975. The republican form of government he advocated was also approved, and in 1980 he was elected president.
