Capetians

Capetians, ruling house of France (987–1328) that laid the basis for the French state by consolidating and extending its power. Hugh Capet, founder of the dynasty, was elected king in 987. Though his rule and territory were limited, his successors gradually increased their land and control. Under the Capetian dynasty many basic administration characteristics of the French monarchy were established, including the parliaments (courts) and the States-General (national assembly).
