Canute

Canute (995?–1035), king of England, Norway, and Denmark. The younger son of Sweyn of Denmark, Canute invaded England with his father in 1013. He withdrew in 1014, when Sweyn died, but invaded again in 1015 and became king in 1016 on the death of Edmund II. In 1019 he succeeded his brother as king of Denmark, and in 1028 he conquered Norway, ousting Olaf II. Canute is noted in English history for having brought peace and codifying English law. Anglo-Saxon rule was reestablished in England in 1042, when Edward the Confessor became king.
