Cambridge



Cambridge (pop. 98,700), English market town, 51 mi (32 km) from London, and home of the Cambridge University. The town grew up in the 9th century at a ford on the Cam River, near what had been a Roman camp. The first university college, Peterhouse, was founded in 1284. Since then the growth of city and university have been closely linked.
