Brooks, Gwendolyn Elizabeth (1917– ), U.S. poet. She was the first African American to win the Pulitzer Prize (1949), for her semiautobiographical Annie Allen (1949). Her books of poems include Bronzeville Boys and Girls (1956), Selected Poems (1963), In the Mecca (1968), and To Disembark (1981).
