Borneo

Borneo, largest island of the Malay Archipelago and third largest in the world (280,100 sq mi/725,459 sq km). It contains the Indonesian province of Kalimantan, the sultanate of Brunei, and the Malaysian states of Sabah and Sarawak. Borneo is a mountainous equatorial island largely clad in tropical rain forest, and drained by several major rivers. Its highest point is Mt. Kinabalu (13,455 ft/4,101 m). The island suffered severely because of the forest fires in 1997–98, which spread easily due to the fact that the rain held off.
