Book of the Dead

Book of the Dead, collection of prayers, hymns, and spells brought into the object-laden tombs of the ancient Egyptians, the earliest of which dates to the 16th century B.C. These writings, which were either inscribed on the walls of the tomb or collected in a text, served as a guide for the soul's journey in the afterlife and a protection against evil.
