Bodhisattva



Bodhisattva, in Mahayana Buddhism, spiritual being on the path to enlightenment. A bodhisattva delays entrance into the state of nirvana until all others have entered the same state. Bodhisattvas are worshiped and can respond to prayer; their exemplary lives are the subject of many Buddhist legends.
