Black widow



Black widow, poisonous spider (genus Latrodectus) of the Americas. Adults are black and have red or orange hourglass-shaped marks on their abdomens. The adult female is 0.5 in (1.3 cm) long and often devours the smaller male during mating. The bite of the black widow can cause considerable pain, swelling, and nausea, but is rarely fatal to healthy adults.
