Black Kettle



Black Kettle (1803?–68), Cheyenne chief known for his efforts to live peacefully with European settlers. Despite this, his people were subjected to unprovoked attacks by U.S. troops. In Nov. 1864 nearly 300 men, women, and children in southeastern Colorado were massacred by troops led by Col. John Chivington. Black Kettle escaped and moved to a settlement in what is now Oklahoma. In Nov. 1868 General George A. Custer led an attack that killed Black Kettle, along with as many as 100 of his people.
