Black Codes



Black Codes, laws enacted after the Civil War in the states that had formed the Confederacy. These codes were aimed at preserving white supremacy after the demise of slavery. Some codes persisted into the 20th century, despite constitutional amendments guaranteeing equal rights for former slaves.
