John Berryman



Berryman, John (1914–72), U.S. poet, active from the 1930s. His reputation was solidified by the long poem Homage to Mistress Bradstreet (1956). Berryman's later work, distinguished by its black ironies and linguistic innovation, includes His Toy, His Dream, His Rest (1968) and Dream Songs (1969). He committed suicide, throwing himself off abridge in Minneapolis.
