Berlioz, Louis-Hector (1803–69), French romantic composer of dramatic, descriptive works. Major works include his Symphonie Fantastique (1830), Requiem (1837), the choral symphony Romeo and Juliet (1838–39), the oratorio The Childhood of Christ (1850–54), and the operas Benvenuto Cellini (1838), and The Trojans (1856–59).
