Vitus Jonassen Bering



Bering, Vitus Jonassen (1681–1741), Danish explorer. Sailing in the service of Russia, he explored northeast Siberia (in the 1720s) and Alaska (1741). The Bering Sea and the Bering Strait are named for him.
