Battle of Belleau Wood



Belleau Wood, Battle of (June 6–25, 1918), part of the World War I second battle of the Marne in which a brigade of U.S. Marines, with French support, halted five German divisions. In 1923 the battlefield was dedicated as a memorial to the American dead.
