John Bell



Bell, John (1797–1869), “Tennessee Bell,” presidential candidate of the Constitutional Union Party (1860) who lost to Lincoln on the eve of the U.S. Civil War. As representative (1827–41) and senator (1847–59), he led a conservative group of antisecessionist southerners.
