Pierre Gustave Toutant de Beauregard



Beauregard, Pierre Gustave Toutant de (1818–93), Confederate general of the U.S. Civil War. In 1861 Beauregard commanded the attack on Fort Sumter, S.C., which opened the war. He distinguished himself at the First Battle of Bull Run, shared command at Shiloh, and held off Union naval attacks on Charleston. Joining General Joseph E. Johnston, he fell back to the Carolinas in the face of Sherman's Georgia campaign, and remained there until the end of the war.
