Joséphine de Beauharnais



Beauharnais, Joséphine de (1763–1814), first wife of Napoleon I and empress of France. Her first husband, General Alexandre, Vicomte de Beauharnais, was guillotined in the Reign of Terror. Their son, Eugène de Beauharnais (1781–1824), was made viceroy of Italy by Napoleon. He distinguished himself in campaigns against Austria and Russia.
