Beach, Sylvia (1887–1962), U.S. expatriate bookstore owner whose Paris shop, Shakespeare & Co., was the center of expatriate literary life in Paris during the interwar period. James Joyce, Ernest Hemingway, and other important writers were frequent visitors. Beach published Joyce's Ulysses (1922).
