Bastogne



Bastogne (pop. 12,500), small town on the Ardennes plateau in southeast Belgium. During the Battle of the Bulge, the German counteroffensive of 1944 in World War II, an American division under Gen. Anthony McAuliffe was surrounded here for some weeks before the Germans were driven back.
