Bass

Bass, or double bass, largest instrument of the violin family. Its form is less standardized than the other string instruments, but it usually stands about 6 ft (2 m) high and has 4 strings 42 in (108 cm) long and tuned in fourths. To increase its range a fifth low string is sometimes added. The strings are made of thick copper wire or steel cable. They are played with a bow.
