Mount Rushmore National Memorial

Mount Rushmore National Memorial, memorial, carved into the northeast side of Mt. Rushmore, of the heads of U.S. Presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln. Located in the Black Hills of South Dakota, it was designed by the sculptor Gutzon Borglum. He and his son supervised execution of the project, which took 6.5 years of actual work to complete, and used dynamite and drills to sculpt the granite. The heads, each about 60 ft (18 m) high, are the largest sculptures in the world and can be easily seen from many miles away.
